Hi Tom,
It looks to me like there is a very real possibility your son is somewhat
carbohydrate intolerant, as in hypoglycemic. This would go far in explaining
his present weight, and his problem of gaining weight on the diet he is now
on. And people who are hypoglycemic, typically have constant cravings for
more carbs and sugar products. While my girlfriend Sandra was never fat
she has been a bodybuilder for 13 years and cyclist for 5) when she got
into cycling, she began adding sport drinks and more carbs to her diet, as
many cyclists do. After 3 years of this, she was having difficulty reaching
the low bodyfat levels she was accustomed to as a bodybuilder, and this was
incredible to everyone, considering she would average close to 45 miles per
day on her bike. Terry Giles recognized her hypoglycemia, put her on the 2
gallons of water per day, along with the starchy carb/ then fibrous carb
routine, exactly measured servings -- 6 to 7 meals per day, elimination of
all carb based sports drinks, along with 6 ounces of protein in every meal
her need---not everyone else's). Between the water effects and the change
in carbohydrate in her diet, plus more meals, Sandra's body changed so
radically in 3 weeks that people in the gym were walking up to her trying to
find out what steroid she was taking----this was actually the typical
reaction gym goers had to her----but she was NOT on steroids, she was just
finally eating the perfect diet for "HER".

Fixing your son's problem does not equate to putting him on what some have
called a "low carb" diet, but rather, finding the amount of starchy carbs
he can tolerate before producing insulin, and making sure he consumes only
measured amounts of starchy carbs in the morning and afternoon, to be
supplanted by fibrous carbs in the evening.

If you think you can keep him motivated to workout with weights 3 or 4 times
per week, for 30 to 45 minutes each day, and he would STICK to a diet that
would NOT include constant hunger as a companion ( Terry's diets have you
eating more than you are used to) ---then you really need to get him a
custom Diet. The hardest thing about these diets to me, is preparing 6 or 7
meals per day, with exactly the components you are allowed, in exactly the
right amounts...I make this easier on myself, by using a good diet protein
supplement powder as a meal replacement for 3 out of 7 meals---I use Ripped
Quick by Cybergenics, since it has a good protein quality, plus no sugar,
just enough carb to get me by till my next real meal, and several fat
burning compounds like L-Carnitine, in large quantities.
If he is not willing to be really strict, this diet will not work. If he is
motivated to really do this full tilt, he will see REAL results in his first
month, and the rewards should help continue his motivation. My guess is he
will need help in the meal preparation and planning, more than any other
area---this was hardest for me.

Regards,
Dan
