Subject: The real challenge to the custom, 6 or 7 meal per day , "Giles Diet"
Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 14:14:30 -0400
The hardest part of this Terry Giles diet, is spending the time buying the
right food for each day, planning the meals out ahead of time, and actually
preparing so many meals----for bodybuilders and elite athletes in
speedskating, cycling and other ultra competitive fitness sports, this is
part of the "lifestyle" . For the very obese members on the lists ,
particularly the ones who enjoy food,, they will have to make radical
lifestyle changes----they will no longer be able to drive down the road,
smell the fine aroma of "Burger King" ( or whatever), and then stop to
inhale 4 Quarterpounders with cheese, 3 bags of French fries and a
milkshake----for many on this list, the "spontaneity" of eating immediately
after "environmental cues" led to a joyous feeding schedule ( even if the
actual quantity of food was not all that large). Before anyone gets pissed
at the Burger King example, that environmental cue will hit "me" any time
"I" get hungry---so you don't have to read this as me slaming others--this
could be me recognizing eating desires I have to control against as well.
The new alternative of "planning" each meal far in advance, destroys much
of the comfort zone, and forces "feeding" to become real work, instead of
aroma gratification. I am exagerating here, not to offend anyone, but to
illustrate a MAJOR change most dieters must make, and one which will be far
harder than they are aware of. If they can realize exactly what this problem
is---as I described it---the aroma gratification, the eating
spontaneity---both of which they must now lose forever....., by identifying
this issue, they may be far less troubled by it, as they begin to approach
the new diet. All your food will be planned from now on. This is the real
"COST" to you in weight loss. You will NOT need to be hungry, at least not
even close to what other diets have made you feel---many people on the Giles
diet can not believe they will be able to eat all the food in the day they
are required to consume.

The other big issue will be fitness training. The Gym will need to be in
your future for at least the period of your necessary weight loss. For some,
this will not be gratifying in itself--it will be work that is NOT fun.
These people will NOT see themselves doing this their entire life. However,
once the weight is lost, the weights can be replaced largely, by cycling,
kayaking, karate, or any one or several of the low impact aerobic
sports----the essential thing here is to TAKE ON a NEW LIFESTYLE, one thats
will always include fitness, but it will be FUN to do the sport, and the
indirect byproduct of enjoying the sport, WILL BE FITNESS. This is your
future, if you want fitness for the rest of your life.
Regards,
Dan
