Uh, I hate to have to break it to you, Jim, but quarries are a whole lot like lakes, at least in terms of water temperature and quality. The difference is quarries, being manmade, will have a lot more by way of steep sides, tunnels and shafts, and leftover equipment from the quarrying days (including tracks, locomotives, pumping and mining stuff, and the like). Many a quarry will offer a chance to use one's caving skills in a real overhead environment in one of the tunnels, or to get technically deep within a short swim from shore.
