Excuse me.

This is one that I *CAN* answer, lowly open-water single-tank diver that I am.

Go down to your friendly neighborhood dive shop and price buoyancy
compensators. You will find that decent BCs are around $500 and up. Trans
Pac is $600-700, depending on options and where you buy it. Most
recreational BCs won't mount double tanks at all, and even if they would,
they do NOT have enough lift to be safe with doubles.

Now price out an AUL backplate, single-strap harness, Seapro wings, and a
Dive-Rite single tank mounting plate, and you are looking at $350, maybe a
bit more if you have to pay shipping. That is NOT an estimate; that is
what I personally spent last year on that specific rig. As a footnote,
observe that I can pull the single plate and the rig immediately accepts
doubles, and it has the lift to do it, right out of the box.

I don't know about you, but I can find other things to do with the
$150-$350 that I didn't spend on the fancy BC that doesn't work as well.
