Doug,

Good points RE piston versus diaphragm first stages.  I would agree with 
you, were it not for the fact that all of my first-stage failures have 
involved diaphragm regulators, and none of my piston first stages have 
ever failed.  Perhaps I didn't have the "right" diaphragm first stages - 
the ones that have failed on me include Oceanic (2 kinds), U.S. Divers, 
and Sherwood.  The only diaphragm first stage that hasn't failed on me at 
one time or another is the Poseidon, but I've only used them on a couple 
hundred dives, so I may not have a large enough sample size.

On the other hand, I have owned 7 Scubapro first stages, and none have 
ever failed.  Again, maybe it's because I've never had the "wrong" 
piston-type first stage. My very first regulator was a SP Mk5, and it's 
still in use today.  I've made more dives with that regulator than any 
other regulator of any kind.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, just relating my own experiences.
