Tom, I'd be up for helping to make this happen. Let me know what mental toughness events you have in mind----we could have an underwater obstacle course in a pool, divers use blacked out masks and have to navigate by feel. Obstacles would have to be fairly repeatable so we could award points fairly to everyone. We could include nets you could get snagged/caught in; monofilament traps; maze barriers to navigate; etc, course to be completed on a 800 psi filled 80cu ft tank. Race We could start with a "run/waddle" in full tech gear (doubles/and carying fins, mask, etc.) for a distance of one half mile (or more if the field desires it). After finish, times of finishing are recorded for addition to next event, and massive re-hydration will be undertaken in preparation for the underwater race..... How about an underwater race with doubles on, from Breakers Reef at the back side (fingers at 90 feet) to the shore, about 1.5 miles. All divers would need to stay on the bottom and have good enough speed and fitness not to run out of air before hitting the shore. Anyone running out of air will be forced to buy a Spare Air as a penalty ;-) Anyone using Force Fins who can make it to shore in the same day will win a pair of real fins :-) And we could add a bonus category for freediving: you make 60 feet you can subtract {10 seconds} from total times so far. you make 80 feet you can subtract 20 seconds} you make 100 feet you can subtract 40 seconds. etc. If you fail to make 60, you add on 10 seconds. Competition in age groups 18-34; 35-44;45-54;55+ I could get channel 12 to cover it, and of course cover this with SFDJ. Its likely mant print pubs would cover this too. Anyone have any other suggestions? Regards, Dan >The techathalon sounds challenging but if it is to be a tech rather >than a cave event the events should be modified.
