> There are actually plans in the works for a -thalon of some kind sponsored > by Bob Izdepski (The Universal Diver publisher) taking place this June in > Louisiana. My understanding is it involves a 24 mile underwater swim across > Lake Ponchatrain (sp?). Few rules other than one concerning human powered > propulsion. One person will be using a surface supply rig and walking > across, others will be swimming using OC with stages supplied by a surface > support teams. I've known Bob for several years - the purpose of this U/W marathon is to draw attention to the Miskito Indians who are getting paralytically bent in droves while lobster diving. I am very sympathetic to this cause, because the same thing is happening (on a smaller scale) to aquarium fish divers in the Pacific. A couple of years ago, I gave Bob my article on IWR (he published it in "The Universal Diver"), and this year at the IWR session at Tek, I found out that the Miskito Indians are now being trained for and are using the Australian IWR method. It turns out, I need to be at a fish meeting in New Orleans on June 14th, with the 'breather. The U/W Marathon starts on June 12. Since I'll be there with the breather, and since it is for a cause I believe in, I've been thinking about giving it a shot. In the months to come, I'll be soliciting opinions on fins, thermal protection, rehydration, navigation, etc. I'll also be looking for sponsors. Aloha, Rich
