There are actually plans in the works for a -thalon of some kind sponsored
by Bob Izdepski (The Universal Diver publisher) taking place this June in
Louisiana.  My understanding is it involves a 24 mile underwater swim across
Lake Ponchatrain (sp?). Few rules other than one concerning human powered
propulsion.  One person will be using a surface supply rig and walking
across, others will be swimming using OC with stages supplied by a surface
support teams.
