Eric,
The stiffest or second stiffest Esclapez fin is designed to be stiff enough
to compensate for the much greater drag of scuba divers. Even their stiffest
fin is very flexible, and it is their extreme length that changes the thrust
and increases the efficiency. I first saw these Esclapez fins at DEMA this
year, and will be getting a few pair to try out soon. They look very much
like the Cressi Rondine Garas, but with the multiple stiffnesses, they can
be custom picked for the workload. I'll see if I can put a pair on George
while he is in full cave gear on an ocean dive(including drysuit), and we'll
find out how well they work with maximum drag... Right now, the Cressi
Rondine Garas I have are so much faster than normal fins, for a typical
single tank scuba set up, that its almost ridiculous. That's why I'm even
challenging Navy Seals with this Force Fin Challenge---the freediving fins
are the REAL unfair advantage in the efficient fins category.
