Well, if Tim Urbanski was practiced in the art of giving up his
primary (on the LONG hose) he would most likely have had a LOT less
stress on the whole scenario he mentioned.  I STILL cringe when I
think of having a part of the mouthpiece stuck between my teeth.

That's a real world example and a dive that really happened.

Practicing and doing it (taking YOUR reg out and donating it) can only
enhance your underwater abilities and, it makes stuffing the long hose
unnecessary.

So, to answer the question that you SHOULD have asked (i.e. is it
safer to donate the reg in your mouth or the other reg), it is safer
to donate the reg that YOU'RE breathing from.  BUt, you worded your
question carefully, probably to avoid the real question and scenario.
