What about the case where the artifacts, not to mention the wrecks themselves, 
are clearly being destroyed and will be lost forever to mankind? 

If others will never be able to enjoy them, what's the point?

Atlantic hurricanes break 400 foot long, 8000 ton steel ships on the bottom to 
pieces. I have enjoyed many artifacts in museums that were recovered by sport 
divers. So have many non-divers who would have never seen them otherwise.
