>Some of us "open water" divers have been considering pushing some >depth limits. We were going to dive with a PADI instuctor that we >know, using air, to a depth at which we were narc'd. > >The intent was to expose us to nitrogen narcosis, in a controlled >manner, so that we would have a feel for "the animal". Lawrence, the goal is not precise enough... What do you want to feel? Do you want to experiment short term memory loss, lack of coordination, focus on a single thing, slow response time, anxiety, do you want to hear the wah-wah or do you want to blackout? May be you the goal is just to have that fuzzy feeling? N2 narcosis have many faces. A single dive will not reveal much about it. Even after hundreds of deep air dives, I can't claim to know the animal. Degree of narcosis (and the depth at which it occurs) depends on many factors, speed and position during descent, how you feel, your attitudes toward narcosis, how you breathe, your effort level, what you eat or drink, and some random factors. There are also other aspects about your dive. How deep are you going? how long? If you are going deeper than 100 feet, you'll be far from the surface. Should an equipment malfunction happen, how do you cope with it? How about you? When diving deep or long, technical diving equipment and methods should be used. Will you or your teacher use the required technology? I need to point out that tech diving is not only a science of carying four tanks and as many regulators attached with 20 snaps, 50 feet of tubing and 87 tie-wraps. It is an attitude, a way to think and approach risks. The goal is to increase diver safety and performance. To come back to your question, I really think that the experiment is useless. PPS: I don't advocate deep diving on air. I don't advocate diving either. Michel Therrien m.therrien@ne*.qc*.ca*
