I originally sent thisto just the other 3 people (trying to keep network traffic low, but Richard Pyle suggested I post it so, here it is. ******************** >This is an old subject that doesn't seem to make much progress. I >strongly advocate Solo Diving as a way to increase your diving skills. I often feel like I'm solo diving even when I dive with a buddy, the only problem is that I feel that I have the additional burden of watching out for them. I *almost never* assume that anyone is watching out for me, the exceptions are few and far between. >For me it is certainly much safer than taking an OW class for their >first ocean dive. I wish the agencies would look at Solo Diving as an >opportunity to train better divers, as we all know that there are many >instances where relying on the buddy system can create a false sense >of security. By far my most enjoyable dives are solo, but I strongly >recommend carrying an independent redundant Air Supply, Spare Air or >Pony Bottle. But, you don't have to dive without a buddy to be self sufficient - simply pretend there's no one else watching you. This should be a way of life for ALL divers. I'm sure Rich will agree with me on this one because he espouses this too. SPARE AIR !!!! OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a useless piece of crap. Pony bottle is good - a "Y" valve on the tank is also pretty good although not quite as much redundancy as a pony bottle, this guarantees you access to your main tank in the event that one of your devices on one of the "Y"s fail. With a "Y" valve you have to be VERY quick to react in some circumstances (e.g. lp hose burst) while a pony seems to me to add a little more rooom for a margin of error. -Carl-
