This subject could be and has been beat to death on places like rec.scuba but albiet it is an important one from the psychological and equipment configuration point of view. The most important aspect of the subject is that like it or not we are all solo diving much of the time we are in the water. Once that fact is accepted we must decide whether the level of difficulty our diving places us in is also acceptable. IMHO solo diving is quite ok (I presume Gil means buddyless) if you are willing to be fully prepared to handle not so nice situations.
