This is an old subject that doesn't seem to make much progress. I strongly 
advocate Solo Diving as a way to increase your diving skills. For me it 
is certainly much safer than taking an OW class for their first ocean 
dive. I wish the agencies would look at Solo Diving as an opportunity to 
train better divers, as we all know that there are many instances where 
relying on the buddy system can create a false sense of security. By far 
my most enjoyable dives are solo, but I strongly recommend carrying an 
independent redundant Air Supply, Spare Air or Pony Bottle.
