From: Don Dapkus ddii Subj: re:weight belts Be careful here in the US - I think that most of the shot sold for hunting these days is NOT lead, but rather steel, since it's much more environmentally friendly (except to the game!) than lead. It eventually rusts away, no heavy metal into the water, etc etc. Of course, using steel shot in an ocean-going weightbelt would probably not be a good idea..... This may only be the case in states like CA, so may not be universal, just check it out. For the same reasons as above, lead shot belts are considered environmentally unfriendly by some folks, and don't seem to be as popular these days as they used to. It seems like this is pretty trivial, especially seeing as the dart industry is bigger in the US than the scuba industry! Over here, we use numbers. The smaller the number, the larger the shot. Selecting the shot (for shooting, not diving!) is a compromise between the number of pellets you can fit in a cartridge, and the lower penetration capability of the smaller pellets. Most lead shot used for game shooting, is alloyed to harden it and thus reduce deformation. This improves its flight characteristics and penetration ability, and, I assume, would make game shot more expensive than 'standard' lead shot. ....
