Scott,

To your question about an unpressurized reg drawing water "backwards" thru the
system - I saw it happen recently. Through a series of errors a friend
completed a deep dive with a empty bottle (closed isolation valve). About a
half-gallon of sea water was sucked thru the reg and into the tank. His rig was
two Scubapro Mk10/G250 regs on double high pressure 120's. It took him two
weeks to discover the problem, and by that time the wet tank was trashed.

In your situation, the tank valve would be closed so the results might be no
more than some spitting and coughing when the reg was used. I turn the pony off
after checking the reg and prior to diving. That leaves about 120-140 psi in
the reg. Assuming no leaks, that's sufficient to protect the reg from water to
a reasonable depth.

I've had a competing recomendation made here. My instructor recommends
the method you outline (gas off on pony until needed), since it eliminates
the risk of an unnoticed freeflow on the pony reg. Another diver suggested
the problem with this approach was the posibility of drawing water into the
unpresurized low pressure hose. I don't have enough experience to counter
this, do you have any thoughts?

I've rigged both of my pony bottles upside down so I can easily reach
the valve, but since this warning I've been uncomfortable with leaving the
valves off.

Thanks,
Scott.
