Cave divers generally put a knot every 10 ft along the line to mark distance. Before plastic arrows became available, we used to use Holtzendorf markers, arrows made of duct tape pressed on the line. So you could use a knot to mark the 10 ft segments and tape markers to show the distance from the end. Some light colored tape like blue duct tape and a Sharpie indelible marker ought to make a good starting point.
