Dave, The onus to train an "Apprentice" has long since been removed from the individual shop owner and taken on by the associations,if it wasn't I would train and certify my own instructors all the time.I figure if you are going to pay $2,000 to learn to teach diving and another $500 to be evaluated you should get value for money, I didn't. You seem to be saying that a newly certified instructor needs guidance and supervision, the association however most definitely does not. They say go forth and teach. As to the examiner bashing, these days it is common place for a 50 candidate IE,especially on the Barrier Reef, can you explain how ALL these people will be properly evaluated in a two and a half day IE by one examiner. I'm not agency bashing either,I think that all recreational diving agencies standards are as good as each other,it's the individual instructors and the system of instructor certification that lets the side down. I now personaly evaluate all the instructors who work for me or wish to use any of my facilities especially PADI ones,I can't trust the 'c' card to be a true representation of the level of certification. If the instructor dosn't measure up to my standards they get the bullet,no retraining is offered thats the agencies responsibility.I would love to change management practices but I don't own shares in PADI Australia Pty Ltd and thus will never have a say.
