Who says you can't pass a PADI IE with only an IDC for experience. I did! It was 6 years since my rescue course,my 1 DM course rescue was a joke,my IE rescue was worse, the examiner had 30 plus candidates and 2.5 days to do the lot.I hadn't dived for 9 months before the IDC but I passed everything first time. I paid my dues and was able to teach rescue from day one. That was nearly 10 years ago,my rescue skills have improved due to experience(full time instruction)since then .Unfortunately I dont think the standard of candidate has improved, about 11 months ago we hired a recent IDC/IE graduate and sent them off to the pool with their first course, the pool owner rang the shop and asked if we knew wether the instructor was certified (they were). He was worried because the instructor was lying on a towel on the side of the pool, sunnies on ,doing the pool sessions. The students would do a skill then surface for further instructions. Had I not seen it for myself I would have thought it was a practical joke. Needless to say the instructor was fired, but why tell the association who certified them after all they said this person is competent and qualified. Paul O'Malley PS. I don't blame PADI, just the examiners. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@terra.net'. Send subscription/archive requests to `techdiver-request@terra.net'.
