you might want to add some ends to it to smooth things out and
make sure the clamps can't slide off.

I think Dacor sells a system like this (for around $40US).

As for the inner tube slices, I run them under my clamps as well.
(I'm the one Todd was referring to recently in the metal thread).
I see small plusses in doing it, no big minuses.  Shrug.
