I want to echo several other thanks to JR. This list has been a real resource for me over the past few years. First as I said to JR and George in private email, I don't think George is the problem. I think he provides a great wealth of knowledge. I really do disagree with his vocabulary, but I'd rather get torn a new asshole and learn something than miss an opportunity to learn something. As for the list in general, right now I think too many people read something, get hmm, "excited" about it and fire off a reply right away, usually to the whole list. ********** PLEASE, take 10 minutes (or even an hour), and cool down before you toast your newfound net.moron. If they were wrong in the first place, they'll still be wrong in 10 minutes. Hell flame them by private email if you must, but the litany of posts saying nothing more than "you are a moron" NEEDS to stop. ********** For my part I thought about this post all day :-) How's this for todays "tech" dive (NOT).... 90 minutes max depth 35ffw using Nitrox 35 (wanted to use up the extra gas leftover from last weeks wreck dive) in a set of doubles. Oh well we did have 5' viz, can I come braille-dive in NJ now Tracey? :-) On the plus side we got a brand new OW diver in the water for 90 minutes of good solid bottom time. Which brings me to Scott Cherf's post.... >The real danger here is that after you've been labeled as 'one of those >tech divers' long enough, you might just start to believe what people say >about you. Then there's the 'screw you, maybe I *am* a technical diver' >risk. I wonder how many of those 'macho', 'wanabe' tech divers out there >are just poor bastards who feel like they have to defend their equipment >choices, and are looking for some peer group that doesn't persecute them >for it (not to imply that could ever work here :). That's me, the four-headed recreational diver, wearing my doubles into the quarry (say son, whatcha need all that there air for?) I hope I don't ever get macho about it (slap me if I do), the ego I see bandied about in diving leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I just smile, nod, and tell the guy I'm an air hog :-) Am I a "techie"? Well to my rec friends I might seem to be. They aren't into figuring out deco theory, think caving is nuts, and can't imagine wearing a set of doubles (much less stages). Do I think I'm a "techie". No, not really. I see myself as a recreational diver who wants to a) dive the best mix I can, b) do some deco if thats what it takes to stay longer on those coastal wreck dives, c) do a good bit of cave diving. Give me these things (or let me (l)earn them anyway) and I'll be a happy diver for many years to come. I don't think I "wannabe" anything more than this(happy). I don't care WHAT label anyone sticks on me then. But I read (spectate usually) techdiver, and ask my questions so that I will always (hopefully) know not only enough for my current level of diving, but understand the NEXT level of diving. I'd like my knowledge to far out-strip my skills. I'll then still only dive to my skill level but make it chase the (hopefully) moving target of my knowledge-level. So in closing to the person who sent me private email saying I am taking the flame-wars "too seriously", yeah I guess I do take them seriously. Techdiver (with any and all its faults) has been a VERY good resource for me over the years. I'd like to see it stay that way. It used to be when someone was wrong, someone told them why. Lately the why has consists of nothing more than "you're a moron". Don't learn much from that. Mike (waiting to see if the flames wait for 10 minutes) -- Mike Zimmerman < zimmmt@au*.al*.co* > Alcatel Network Sytems, Ral, NC *My opinions, not Alcatel's* [\] NC Diving: http://www.vnet.com/scuba/ A is A. Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it.
