Beginning of last week, CIS had a problem that caused large amounts of internet mail directed at them to bounce. I manage another mailing list, and Compuserve was changing the addresses on mail directed to their members and then bouncing it, complete with a tutorial about how to address mail to Compuserve members. I got 20 or 30 successive bounces from everyone on my list from compuserve for a couple of days straight before they fixed it. I even got bounces after I got a note telling me that they had fixed it. (If you think that techdiver agencies are bad, eheck out the SCCA sometimes). The timing isn't right for that to be the reason for the 30% falloff, though, which was noticed (I thought) before George was sent his first notice, because that would have put it before the Compuserve foulup, if the published timings were correct. But, yes, when people can't get e-mail most all you can do is to knock them off of the list. You can't send them e-mail saying that you've done that, as they won't get it.
