To All Techdiver Members I run the Techdiver Mailing list. As many of you know, I am not currently subscribed to the list myself, due to pressures of other work. I am reading selected threads of the list using the WWW interface. I've been fortunate to miss much of the recent "offensive" material on the list. However, I have been aware of it, and I have been taking action. I have received mail from various folk over the last two or three weeks about George M Irvine III (UXMA73A@pr*.co*). I corresponded with George just over a week ago, requesting that he use language more appropriate for a public forum, and that he tone down his antagonistic messages. I informed him that he may be removed from the list if he did not change his manner. He did write back. His response was somewhat arrogant. I decided to wait one week in order to see if he would, in fact, heed the warning. During this last week, I have received much more email from other members requesting that George be removed. I have also noticed that about 30% of the membership has unsubscribed. I have seen further postings from George that continue to be offensive. As a result, I just advised George that I am deleting has address `UXMA73A@pr*.co*' from the membership list. This is the first time in the list's history that I have had to remove an individual in this way. It is with great regret that I have done this. I strongly support free speech, and I am open to the views of others -- in fact, I run this list specifically to provide a forum for the opinions of others -- but I do not want to see this list destroyed. Many members have voiced opinions about George. I have taken this action after requests from many members and, sadly, after the loss of many other members. The listserver has two facilities that should prevent further postings from the `UXMA73A@pr*.co*' address. Firstly, the listserver will block resubscription attempts from the this address. Secondly, I have enabled the Members-Only filter on the listserver. The listserver will no longer forward postings from addresses that are not subscribed to the list. This feature may cause some inconvenience to the rest of us. You will only be able to post to the list if you post from the exact address that you used to subscribe. If your posting address varies in any way from your subscription address, the posting will be returned to you with an error message. Please let me know (at `owner-techdiver@terra.net') if you experience problems with this. I have not, at this time, restricted new subscriptions. Anyone can still subscribe to the list. Of course, this means that George M Irvine III could resubscribe using a different account. Please let me know if this happens. I hope that the list will return to its former quality. I also hope that many folk who recently left will soon resubscribe. -jr
