Hi folks,

I run the TechDiver mailing list server. Since there have been some
concerns about recent list problems, I thought I say a few words about
what's going on.

The "duplicate message" problem seems to have been solved. This appears
to have been caused by a mis-configuration in how messages were forwarded
from the TechDiver list server.

This "list crash" problem is proving elusive. When I look at the list
files here, everything seems normal. I see almost 400 subscribers on
the list, which is about the most the list has ever had. Yet, several
folk have sent email indicating they are being unsubscribed regularly,
and that they believe others are also.

The list server is automatic. Every message to the list typically
generates 3-4 warnings about delivery being delayed to various
recipients, as well as the occasional total bounce. Dealing with
this volume of errors in my mailbox became a real nusiance, so I set
up the automatic server about 18 months ago. The auto-server deletes
any address for which 25 consecutive list messages bounce. Typically
this means that someone is deleted after their email has been
bouncing for about a week. Until recently, this has not been a
problem.

The list server does keep logs and backup copies of old alias files.
In the case of troubles I can see what is happening, and, if necessary,
I can restore the list very easily. As a result of your recent problem
reports, I am watching the list carefully at the moment. So far,
things seem fine from here, but given the number of people who have
sent email, something must be wrong, so I will keep watching.

If you do think you've missed a message, you can follow a discussion by
thread using the list's Web server interface. Take a look at the URL:

and click on "TechDiver Mailing List".

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'm sure we'll have the problems
solved soon. Thanks for your patience.
