Reply to: RE>George Irvine III - Argue with Reality -------------------------------------- Date: 9/14/95 6:10 PM To: Gerry Smith From: William W. Mee I have noticed a growing cadre of people who would like to silence the voice of Mr. George Irvine, permanently. <snip> Bill Mee Bill, The "...permanently." above sounds ominous, I doubt if we want that. But... I appreciate the post. It's nice to learn a bit more about George`s background - but I think you miss the point made by most of GI III's detractors. No one has complained of any lack of knowledge or experience on GI III's part. It's his lack of willingness - or perhaps ability - to communicate something useful to the group. Note the use of the word "communicate" - he obviously can talk (or type in this case), but the minuscule bit of information he posts gets lost in a storm of childish invective, pointless diatribe and egotistic braggadocio. His personal SNR is off the bottom of the scale, and he's dragging the whole group with him. You may know him well enough to get past his ego problem. But the great majority of techdiver subscribers know George only by his posts, and the kind of dialog they engender. A direct result of these posts is my mental picture of him. It shows an over weight has-been cracker, sitting on the front porch of a fly-blown shack with a shotgun over his knee. He spends his day making pig-ignorant pronouncements about the worth of divers he's never met, and taking pot-shots at those who fail to genuflect in his direction - boring all who will listen with tales of how great he is. Hey - if I met the guy, I'd probably be surprised at how wrong that picture is, but that's unlikely. As a result of your biography of GI III, I'll probably try harder to pull gems out of the garbage he posts, but it will be a fight to get past the mental snapshot he inadvertently sent to me (and, I think, to a lot of others.) By far, his most egregious transgression is to drive others from this newsgroup. We're here to exchange information for the good of all. A reasonable man would have looked at the flurry of "unsubscribe" posts and toned down the rhetoric. But not George, he gets into an ad-hoc contest to see how many more techdivers and aspiring techdivers he can shove off the net. Is this indicative of his commitment to training? I suppose my point is this: Sure, George III knows a lot but his signal-to-noise ratio is so low that we don't benefit from that knowledge. Since he's now driving others from the newsgroup, he's a much bigger liability than an asset. Therefore the group would be better off without his participation. This is my opinion, I'll argue it with anyone - but GI III-style flames will be cheerfully ignored. Gerry Smith
