Hello TechDivers! I'm a recent subscriber to your newsletter and was following the advice to introduce myself. My name is Carlos Palacio and I live in Miami, Florida (45 minutes from Key Largo!). I am O/W certified through PADI, and am currently working on my Advanced O/W. My interest in diving was always that it gave one the ability to see and do things that were otherwise impossible. In past years I have become increasingly disappointed with the dive operators in my experience because all they seem to offer are boring 25' reef dives one could free dive while snorkling. I do not know if this is due to reasons of liability, or if the promotion of this sport will cause the standards of required ability to be lowered to some least common denominator. To me the most enjoyable dives have been those with an element of challenge. I do not mean diving beyond one's capabilities, or training, as that is the quickest path to tragedy. I mean the chance to actually use everything you've learned and (hopefully) practiced. Two of my favorite types of dives are wreck dives and fresh-water springs. This year I hope to do plenty of both, and maybe try for a cavern certification. If anybody is ever in this part of the world and needs a buddy, e-mail me and I'll be there in a heartbeat!
