Greetings! My name is Fredrik Swartz (CMAS M3S 091). I am a national instructor on the Technical Committe of the Swedish Underwater Federation. Diving in the Baltic sea on the east coast of Sweden near Stockholm is mainly wreck diving. Water temperatures below 20 meters is in the 2-7 degrees Celsius range thrughout the year. Visibility is usually in the 0-5 meter range depending on location, time of year and depth. Visibility tends to improve as one travels south and I have experienced visibilty in the +20 meter range. Wrecks tend to be better preserved at greater depth (ice conditions during winter tend to flatten all wrecks down to 20 meters depth). The low temperatures and The the brackish water of the Baltic dos not lend itself as a habitat to the parasites of the salt water seas. As a result hereof wooden wrecks are preserved by the Baltic for a indefinite time. We have recovered parts of wooden wrecks more than 1000 year old. As you may imagine, any development in materials and methods that will extend our maximum depth limit and depth endurance is of interest. Possible future development of technical aids may include: 1. Mixed gas rebreather for commercial/sporting use (Interspiro of Sweden has developed a semi closed circuit system known as ACSS used with Nitrox for military purposes). 2. Chemical heating of drysuit (prototype Hydrogen Peroxide system exists in Sweden, interesting in sofar as the exhaust from the catalytic burner is pure oxygen). 3. UW communication systems. 4. Better and more comfortable dry suits, gloves etc. If you have any queries regarding technical facts and/or geographical data from Sweden, I would be pleased to assist.
