WRT Richards questions; why does the Poseidon blow ice when it's cold? My understanding is that the design is *old* and was developed at a time when a high performance cold water reg was needed, as there was no other. Asthetics went by the by. Personally I find it comforting to have the ice coming out as i) it tells me that freezing is an issue, if I was in doubt before, and ii) at least it isn't staying inside to gum up the works. I don't know whether it would be possible to teflon coat the part that freezes (I think it's that little metal 'vane' inside the mouthpiece) to prevent nucleation, but it certainly doesn't seem to need it as far as air delivery goes. BTW I agree the poseidon isn't as comfortable to breathe as other designs, but once I'd got used to it I began to find the others 'squishy' and not inspiring of confidence (hmm, advertising tag line here?). Fresh water freezes more than salt because of the phenomenon you described, i.e. if the decompression supercooling drops the ironmongery to say -2C, then fresh water will freeze, salt won't. (Fresh freezes at about 0C, salt at anything down to -10C). Cheers Jason. PS who moved the ozone hole over Scotland, we're frying here!
