Subject: Re: dry suits with attached hoods

I recently saw someone diving in what appeared to be a neoprene dry suit
with an attached hood. I am curious about this. If you have experience
with this type of suit could you let me know what you think? I am
wondering about 1) comfort and ease of donning and 2) loss of air through
the hood and "air head".
     thanks Bob Favorite

I own a Poseidon and a Viking, both of which have dry hoods. The
Poseidon has a neoprene hood, with an unlined neoprene faceseal that
contacts the skin around the face. The Viking has a latex hood, under
which a hat must be worn.

I've found that the Poseidon is much wetter than the Viking, but more
comfortable. The Poseidon is easier to pull down and replace between
dives, and can be handled while wearing gloves. The Viking is more
apt to rip, however is really dry, and hence warmer in the water.

Equalizing while wearing a dry hood is a bit different than when
wearing a wet hood. You must snort a little air into the hood to pop
your ears. Also, the dry hoods can tend to inflate. I installed a
little valve in my dry hood to vent the air. That makes using the
hood easier, but makes equalizing a little trickier at times.

     I'm pleased with both systems.
