Rod, If a diver is about to enter an environment where hypoxia is a potential threat, they need to understand this threat, and its symptoms. If this student diver had a full fask mask on (he did), clearly there was no risk of drowning. Since he was under second by second observation by his instructor, there was no potential for brain damage or any other kind of damage. The only potential I see is for this diver to have learned how serious gas physics is and several reasons for him to make an attempt to learn more than he had been (he had not been reading or trying to learn the academic portion of the nitrox course). Talking about chambers in this scenario seems unrealistic. If a diver is so frail that they can't do this in the controlled environment of a pool, with direct supervision (and oxygen bottle next to the pool), then they are a wimp, and have no place in tech diving (Kind of like karate where they don't allow hits to the face). The purpose of the drill was not to cause a blackout, but to create an uncomfortable exposure, while simple drills were being performed. And I still say this is NOT the issue. The issue is, if YOU were sold a rebreather which was supposed to be easy for you, but found out later that it was far beyond your abilities to use, and that you could not get your money back, would it be your fault for being suckered, or the fault of all manufacturers for not putting in safeguards to prevent this. If a person is sold beachfront property in Kansas, maybe they are stupid, but they were handled fraudulently by some real estate swindler. The point here is that we can suggest policy to the manufacturers, to prevent improper sales. Dan >Hypoxia in water is ridiculous.
