In response to David Drake's reference to comment that I had too many "dead friends to care about the hurt feelings of all you living legends", let me add Bobby McGuirre , whose funeral was today, to that list. This was in reference to a call I received from an equipment manufacturer irate because I would not allow his faulty gear to be used at our dive site. I suggested that he check with divers before deciding what would be good for us. It would probably be more productive to talk about what works. The best thing to do, which is what I did when I started out is two-fold. 1) rent or try different gear before buying, and 2) look at the guys who are doing either the dives you want to do, or are serious players on the theory that they have worked these things out. For example, if it's cold water diving, check with the Canadians to see how they keep warm. If it's wreck diving, check with a guy like Bill Deans whose safety record and results speak for themselves. If it's chasing fish in your underwear, check with Rich Pyle. If you want to shoot the fish, check with Dan Volker. If you then want to eat them, bring them over to my house. Seriously, I didn't mean the gear would directly kill you, I meant that we use certain things and an overall configuration and method designed to prevent problems. - G
