I'll try to be short and not too boring. I've had two panic inducing experiences in a cave. The first I actually did panic. How long I don't know, but I clearly recall some things. After thinking of my wife and kids and my funeral I thought either I assert control or I die, I laid down on the cave floor. closed my eyes and relaxed. I was overcome by a (don't laugh) Zen sort of calmness, probably a result of relaxing with that high an adrenaline level. I also remember praying "God if you get me out of here, I'll go to church on Sunday". Guess where I was the next Sunday - yep front row! The second incident, was not nearly as disconcerting. Trying to exit Little Dismal I came upon my buddy, stuck in the restriction. I felt the panic urge but I went almost instantly into a planning mode, ticking off ALL the alternatives my limited experience and reading have put into my knowledgebase. I even calcualated how much time my air would last which was very comforting. Resolved the problem my pushing my tanks out in front of me. It seems that diver #3 who never made it into the cave had created a sand obstruction in the restriction somehow. I've been unfortunate to witness some nightmare situations in life and it seems that some poeple almost automatically go into the action mode while others freak or become paralyzed. My guess is that the latter two groups won't be posting too much about their close calls ? Safe Diving Ronnie Bell
