Hi, Richard Pyle said; (in response to my saying that the dive gods shouldn't get the credit for 'inventing' nitrox diving for us mortals. **** I agree with your point here, especially for some of the issues regarding nitrox that started this particular thread. However, I also think that the commercial dive industry doesn't deserve *all* the credit. Commercial divers don't have a long record of cave diving, or even self-contained mixed-gas diving. One of the most important skill/concept in "technical diving" is self-reliance, which is sort of opposite of how the commercial industry has generally opperated. In fact, the main contribution from the commercial industry has been the experience with the effects of different gases on people and other objects at different pressures. This, I think, of the important knowledge and skills (in my opinion, anyway) that we use have come from individuals who really had no predecessors at all. *** Ok Richard, they (the gods) have contributed to diving, and I was getting rather carried away when I said that they had really nothing to do with finding anything out. But I did say that in response to the suggestion that I should shell out money for nothing because they need to eat. I don't see anyone shelling out to employ me as a diver unless they need something done underwater. I still find this recurring idea, that dive instructors are somehow different from other service providers and deserving of charity, rather bizzare. Cheers Jason :) PS It was probably the Navies of the world that we should be thanking, not the commercial or recreational industries anyway. Not only did they work out (or pay for it to be worked out) what to breath at what depth, they also invented redundant systems. Send out 2 divers so that if one dies, the other can complete the mission ;)
