However, I also think that the commercial dive industry doesn't deserve *all* the credit. Commercial divers don't have a long record of cave diving, or even self-contained mixed-gas diving. One of the most important skill/concept in "technical diving" is self-reliance, which is sort of opposite of how the commercial industry has generally opperated. In fact, the main contribution from the commercial industry has been the experience with the effects of different gases on people and other objects at different pressures. This, I think, of the important knowledge and skills (in my opinion, anyway) that we use have come from individuals who really had no predecessors at all.
