What is the official word on advertising on this list?  If someone is
describing its own product at length and comparing it to other similar
products, is it considered advertising?

No flames please, but I think that this matter should be clarified soon.
If we ban commercial advertising than all is clear. If we permit it,
then maybe we should encourage companies making "technical" gear to post
here.
