Education beyond certification? With regard to the proliferation of tech courses, I agree with Jason that everything you need to know about nitrox can be covered in one day of theory. The courses seem to be aimed at the lowest common denominator, and most people would be able to grasp the basics in one day. Obviously the instructor would evaluate each student to ensure an adequate understanding is reached. With regards to the actual diving, I beleive a higher standard for deep diving should be applied than is presently so. Deans has the right approach, evaluating each prospective student in the water. I would assume that there is a reasonable failure rate at this point, as the fact is that deep diving is not for everyone. I am not being elitist. Some divers will never be ready to dive deep/mix, no matter how many dives they have done, nor how good their understanding of the theory. I beleive this is something that the tech agencies include in their standards. I would be interested to hear from deep/mix instructors on this list that have refused certification, even after the fees have been paid. Rod Nairne.
