Udo, this guy is spitting out garbage. He is all resentful over the video
clip.

As dives get deeper and more complex, the risk of a rebreather starts to
come into line with the risk of open circuit, but then you have to figure in
the players. Guys like JJ ,Ted Cole and the Rat ( Barry Miller )can hang in
there way beyond most on a set of 104s and stages at that depth. They turn
the dives with plenty of gas. They were the ones doing the harder dives. The
big breathers were not, and they did not deploy the halcyons due to pain in
the ass factors.

Cousteau did the dive on triple 80s. We used to do the 400+ stuff here with
double 80s and a stage, but the bottom times were not exactly sat dives.

The Halcyon RB is the best bet for doing these things now. The difference is
that guys like Nauton think that using a Buddy or some other abortion with
inadequate bailout and the usual "every man for himself" attitude is somehow
a good idea. One of our guys made the comment that he would not use one if
he had HIV, but might consider it if he had "full blown AIDS". That is how I
see CCRs - there is nothing about diving that makes me want to spin the
chamber and pull the trigger.

The other thing this genius said was some drivel about sidemounts. There are
ways to do that correctly and then there is the British way ( every man for
himself solo diving). This guy just does not get what DIR is about, and
merely wanted to start a fight on the lists calling DIR a "cult". I think a
better description of a cult is what goes on with CCRs and solo diving:
dying for a perceived cause. I guess the cause is proving something, like
Francis Macomber in the Hemingway story, but in any event, this guy is just
one more in a long list of complainers who don't get it.

Simon;

Guess you didn't know about the Britannic Expedition done by GUE with a
tad below 100 meters in the ocean. Check out

http://www.gue.com/research/britannic/divelog.shtml

Just scanned the pages of the dive log... including the pictures...
there was no mentioning of CCR's in the text (must have missed it) and
didn't see one picture of divers with a CCR on their back... unless
those "CCR's" were designed to fool others to look like double 104's.

Maybe you are not correct about your second point...

Udo
