Tim, just put me down as Project Director of the WKPP. We never sent any of
those record dives into Guinness. There were several of them by various
combinations of team members which were World Records over the past 15
years, but as you obviously know, one of the key elements on the long deep
dives has been the method of decompression. Gear, teamwork, techniques,
propulsion, etc are all key elements, but the fact that we were able to
vastly reduce while improving decompression allowed these dives to take
place. The size of our team and the frequency of the extreme dives done
produces deco information which I feel is one of our best contributions to
the game.

I also don't make an issue of the records since I don't want anyone outside
of diving to know I do any of this - it makes them think I am nuts. When I
worked for Morgan Stanley, they all thought it was pretty cool since those
people trade the way we dive, but in the rest of the world they look at me
like I am a weirdo. It all may be a moot point anyway since Michael and
Reinhard are likely to break our 19,000 foot penetration record when they go
back to Doux de Coly later this month.

My real claim to fame is that I am smart enough to latch onto guys like
Weinke, Gavin, Buchally and others who are clearly out front while ignoring
the rest and learn from them. I am a World Record Bullshit Avoider and a
World Record recognizer of people who know what they are doing.

NAUI to Host Deep Stops and Modern Decompression Strategies Workshop

NAUI Worldwide will host a cutting edge Workshop on deep stops and modern
decompression strategies on February 22-23, 2003, in Tampa, Florida. This
Workshop will include leading scientists, physiologists, and doctors from
around the world involved in the development and testing of modern
decompression strategies.

The Workshop will feature 45-minute presentations with 10 minutes of
questions after each presentation. At the end of the Workshop there will be
a panel discussion that will summarize findings and conclusions. NAUI
Worldwide will publish proceedings from the Workshop.

The following is a list of speakers, and more will be added later.

Alf Brubbak, PhD, Physiologist, University of Trondheim
Mike Gernhardt, PhD, Commercial Diver, Astronaut, NASA
  Jean Imbert, Table Designer, COMEX
George Irvine, Guinness Record Cave Diver, WKPP
Charles Lehner, PhD, Physiologist, University Wisconsin
Tom Neuman, MD, Associate Director, University of California, San Diego
Michael Powell, PhD, Biophysics Researcher, NASA
Richard Pyle, Marine Zoologist, Bishop University
Richard Vann, PhD, Researcher, PDE Coordinator, Duke University, DAN
