Sorry, you took my tongue and cheek about me being able to steer straight
literally. I was saying that to emphasize that "I" have no idea how to
captain a boat, I can only steer straight. Nothing to do with the issue at
hand, sorry for the confusion. Should have put a smiley face after it! A
monkey being able to drive a boat straight was exactly my point, me being
the monkey! :-)

I don't know that actual seas that day. I've been on a 55 ft boat, wide
beam in 10 footers and I can't see how a person could be picked up or
dropped in those conditions. You couldn't even come close to walking the
deck without risking being tossed. Can you really do a pick up in those
conditions. Either way, I doubt the conditions were as bad as I described.
If it's not "mandatory" then they probably have at a minimum dropped their
chase boat!

Art.

I'm not a boat captain, not by a long shot. I can steer then straight,
that's about it. I thought when you have rough seas that it's standard
procedure to do a pick up while moving into the wind? Maybe I'm wrong,
certainly could be?
