Subject: Tech Diving in Grand Cayman
To: Aquanaut Mail <techdiver@aquanaut.com>
Was in Grand Cayman for a week of tech diving and have a couple
of comments.

The good: Divetech, www.divetech.com, and Cobalt Coast Resort,
www.cobaltcoast.com, were first-class and I recommend them highly
to rec and/or tech divers alike. The IANTD trimix course I took
met my expectations, and the instructors at Divetech are heavy
on knowledge and light on ego (in contrast to this mailing list).
And meeting Tom Mount briefly at Sunset House, teaching a rebreather
course, was a pleasure...Tom, you are in great shape for your age,
and thanks for a great course.

The not-so-good: The diving at Grand Cayman sadly does not
compare with her sister islands, Brac and Little. Although very
good in general, the wall on Grand pales compared to the wall on
Little (but then few if any other walls in the Caribbean can compare
to Little). The shallow stuff at Divetech, where most deco time is
spent, is sandy, lacking in coral and marine life, and basically
dull. A few lettuce-leaf nudibranchs are crawling about, but I
expected lots of coral and marine life right up to shore, and that
just is not the case. Finally, Grand Cayman has developed exponentially
since my last dive trip there, nearly twenty years ago. It has become
an island for the very rich, moreso than any Caribbean island I have
visited (Cozumel, Roatan, Cayman Brac, Grand Turk, Providenciales,
Bonaire, Curacao, Martinique, to name some), and a diver can do much
better IMHO. Oh and I'm pretty sure I saw my first Doing-It-Rightist
ever on a dive trip, at the resort. The Halcyon BC and steel-springed
finstraps were evident, plus the guy was a loud-mouthed, arrogant,
obnoxious, self-centered type...yep, that'd be DIR.
