Diving is like any other sport.  You need to use good judgement.

You could get killed playing football and I'm sure everyone involved
recognizes that it could happen but no one expects it to.  If you have an
existing head injury, you don't play.  They bench you and any coach that put
you on the field would be in hot water.  Its the same thing here.
Conversely, if your coach is foolish enough to put you on the field, you
need to be smart enough to say no.  This instance was a little of both.
