It is not a good idea. In the case of the safety spool double ender,
obviously you can cut it off. In the case of the big reels, I would not dare
to that on a wreck dive, but for cave diving, I can break that snap so
easily that I don't bother tying line to it, and I never clip it to myself
directly. I put it on a bottle where I then could cut it off or break it.

However, this still does not make it a good idea. Better to buy a nice , big
stainless clip and tie it to the reel. I only use reels for exploration so
am not carrying anything but spools otherwise, and they are clipped off to
bungee cord in my pocket.

I use an EE reel with a double-ender. This seems to violate the no
metal-to-metal connection rule, but my Tech 1 instructor didn't seem to have
any problems with it.

If anyone knows why this metal to metal connection is permitted and the rest
are not, please let me know.
