Justafish (?!),
What you and some others on this list are missing is mistaking =
anger for happiness. I can assure you that any diving death hurts Trey, =
me and all of us. Sometimes it takes a fatality for "the message" to =
reach some people- I was one of them. The fact that there has been a =
long-standing opposition to electronic rebreathers due to some =
fundamental conceptual flaws and they "mysteriously" keep killing =
people makes this more tragic. If it takes a fatality to get the message =
across then it's human nature to believe that the best person to send =
the message is someone who was a vocal proponent of the cause of the =
accident. For example, this list was in a rather heated discussion of =
Tony Maffatone's convoluted rig when one of the fundamental conceptual =
flaws inherent in his rig killed him. I'm sure Tony was a "good guy" and =
"loved by all that knew him" and all that other stuff people say when =
death outwits the living, but that doesn't change the tecno-darwinian =
outcome.
This "accident" is the antethesis of DIR. Electronic rebreather, =
solo, wrong equipment for the dive... it would probably be easier to =
list what was right about it. Bottom line is DIR is a safer way to dive =
and some people don't like George as the messenger of that. Big deal. =
How about JJ or Andrew or me or any of the other proponents of DIR? =
Maybe it takes a death or series of deaths to make the point to some =
people. Eric, Steve Berman, Rob Palmer... These aren't the =
first-open-water-dive-since-certification accidents like the guy in =
California this past weekend. These are experienced divers who =
compromised some aspect of the dive and got caught. To some extent, we =
all spin the chamber whenever we drop below the surface but if I have to =
spin the chamber I want a lot of empty chambers to stack the odds in my =
favor.=20
Contrary to many people's belief, the rigidity of DIR diving =
provides more freedom and enjoyment than the loose, uncoordinated =
"personal preference" diving style so prevalent today- It's like having =
interchangable dive buddies.
So tell me- What does it take for YOU to get the message? Sugar-coated =
dilivery, a 2X4, the death of someone you thought had their act =
together? Let me know and I'll find someone who can speak the language =
you can hear.
C.

  Trey.
First of all, I have to say I watched the WKPP special on Discovery. =
Yes, it was impressive, however,
you have to realize Discovery is good.
In regards to your gloating over another's death, you really shouldn't =
be so critical of other divers. We all know YOU think you are the =
best...or at least are trying to be. You too can learn from others. =
Your way is not necessarily the right way for others. I see few times =
when you offer valuable information. Perhaps you feel such joy when a =
life is taken away, because this helps to shrink the population, thus =
aiding you in becoming closer to the top. Remember, you dive down, not =
up! Keep searching for an exit to the caves. Perhaps someday you will =
reach it, however, don't be surprised if you have traveled a great =
distance down, only to lead to the door of hell.
  Happy diving!
