During WWII my father was a B-24 bomber pilot with the 829th Squadron of the 485th Bomb Group (H). He flew 51 missions out Venosa, Italy bombing the crap out of Germany, Romania, Austria and other places. He flew 6 of the 7 missions the 485th flew to bomb the Ploesti oil fields and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for leading the 485th BG on a bomb run AFTER having 2 of his 4 engines taken out by flak. His wartime activities resulted in considerable "collateral damage". So much so that my father and his fellow BG members returned to their civilian jobs and rarely spoke of their wartime activities for fear that folks back home would think them evil monsters for having inadvertently killed "innocent" civilians in their efforts to stop the Nazi war machine. BTW some of the "innocent civilians" were known to have beaten airmen to death when they parachuted from their disabled planes. War is ugly, people die, some of which didn't deserve to die. As I recall we did this to Germany because, among other things, their was some lunatic killing innocent people in large numbers. Lets see, what are we looking at 5,000 and rising in under an hour. That's more than Hitler ever killed in an hour! War is ugly, people die, some of which don't deserve to die. It would appear that the only way to stop the beast of global terrorism is to eradicate it. It will be ugly, people will die, some of which don't deserve to die. I don't take this position lightly. My only son, age 21, is presently serving in the US Navy and will be in harms way. Dave Dalton Last Stanza of the Star Spangled Banner (Which most Americans have never heard) "Oh thus be it e'er when free men shall stand Between their lov'd homes and war's desolation! Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Pow'r that has made and presrv'd us a nation And conquer we must when our cause is just And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave." ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe" <joe@po*.co*> To: <techdiver@aquanaut.com>; "Patrick Duffy" <pduffyca@ea*.ne*> Cc: "Techdiver" <techdiver@aquanaut.com> Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2001 9:13 PM Subject: Re: Lines in the Sand > My sentiments exactly.
