The little dial on the cover of the R380 operates a small cam on the other
side of the cover which depresses the diaphragm. This is intended to take
some of the pressure off of the low pressure seat when the regulator is not
in use, thereby reducing the "set," or indentation formed in the pliable
seat. By reducing or eliminating this set the regulator holds its adjustment
longer. This function is found in many regulators in the industry and is
accomplished in different ways in different regulators. The problem with a
manual control, such as the one on the R380, is that the diver must remember
to operate it. If you do not like it you can just leave it in the "dive"
position. It is not necessary to remove it, but if you want to it can be
removed easily. Open the case and it should become quite apparent to anyone
with any mechanical ability how to do it.

The last R380 that I got from Scubapro did not have this control. They may
have eliminated it.

The S550 does not have a manual switch such as the R380. The S550 has an
automatic anti-set feature which takes pressure off of the low pressure seat
whenever the air is turned off.

Safe diving,
