Hi everyone. How about a bit of of lateral thinking. Instead of getting hung up on which mixes you can use, how about consdering the objectives of the courses. 1)basic EANx diver "This programme has been designed to provide recreational divers with a safer breathing medium in the surface-40 metre/130fsw range" (IANTD stds/procedures oct1994) Allowed mixes are not specified. However, the course is aimed at No d diving in this range, thus for a 1.4 bar max PPO2 this would need a 28%mix (metric / imperial conversions account for the 28%/29% discrepancy). BUT this is an entry level course and most instructors teach the NOAA I and II mixes and advise students to stick to these - at this point best mix maths is only taught briefly. Note a dive is NOT compulsory on this course provided the student has logged 50 dives and is advanced OW qualified or above. So while standards do not state which mixes you may use, bear in mind the objective of the course, and, that instructors have some latitude in what they teach as long as they adhere to the standards. 2)Advanced EANx "This course has been designed to extend the divers knowledge in the use of EANx in recreational diving. " This course DOES require dives, and decompression techniques and the use of 50% EANx as deco gas is taught. Best mix maths, and an intro to CNS theory are discussed. This diver would be qualfied to calculate and use mixtures appropriate to the dive and to use a richer mixture (up to 50%)for deco. This is not a technical level course, but does provide a grounding for Tech EANx. 3)Tech EANx. This programme had been developed to train divers to carry out dives in the 51msw/170fsw range.....provide a complete knowldge of all EANx mixtures, the use of decompression mixtures and the use of oxygen on deco. This is both a theory AND skill intensive course. CNS/OTU tracking, gas blending theory, field operational procedures, custom tables and more are discussed at length. Proficiency at in water skills is mandatory. This diver will be qualified to use any mixture up to 100%O2, and the skills and theory taught at this level are essential precursors for trimix. I'm sorry I can't give these absolutes that we are used to working with in air training (130fsw max??? .. why) to those that need them, but I am sure that if you all consider the type of diving you wabt to do you will reach the right conclusion about whether or not you are qualified to buy the right gas to do it. Hope this helps Martin In your message dated Monday 27, March 1995 you wrote : > > not that i'm unappreciative of all the answers i'm getting, > about the various IANTD nitrox courses, but i'm more confused > than when i started..... > > let's see: > > we have 1 vote for: basic - 29% to 40% > advanced - up to 50% > > we have 1 vote for: basic - 32% and 36% > advanced - 29% to 40% > > we have 1 vote for: basic - 32% and 36% > advanced - 29% to 40% > technical - any mix > > we have 2 votes for: basic - 29% to 36% > advanced - 22% to 40% with up to 50% for deco > technical - all mixes > > we have 1 vote for: basic - 32% and 36% > advanced - 21% to 40% with up to 50% for deco > > we have 1 vote for: basic - 32% and 36% > technical - any mix > > we have 2 votes for "are there really 3 levels? i thought there were > only two." > > the pattern seems to be, people who took the class think basic only > qualifies you for 32% and 36%. people who say they are reading the > standards all say basic is 29-36 except someone who says the standard > says 29-36 but it should be 40 (not sure what that means). > > i called IANTD directly and spoke with patty mount. she said: > > basic - 29% to 36% > advanced - 22% to 40% with up to 50% for deco > technical - all mixes with 80% being the highest recommended mix > > i think i'm going back to my air.... > > -maria > -- > Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@opal.com'. > Send subscription/archive requests to `techdiver-request@opal.com'. > > -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Martin Smith Deep Blue Diving Ltd EMail martin@de*.de*.co*.uk* | | Mail sent via Demon Internet in th UK | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
