Paul, It isn't about speed. They're built to make a tourist's air last longer on a reef. It ends: departments/input_output/input_out.html The fins are optimized for fairly light thrust, so it is not hard to overdrive them. You'll find articles all over the place on them with various tests under various conditions. Note a couple of things: 1. The trials are usually taken at a fixed speed and air consumption for the distance travelled is the figure of merit. 2. The better your finning technique and leg strength, the less they help.
