2 weeks ago, my assistant instructor asked me to try her Mares fins. You
know, the $189 fins. I gave her my Quattros. We gently finned down the pool.
She kicked my ass with my fins. We tried again going harder. She kicked my
ass again. All this in a 20 yard pool. It was not even close! I like Mares
gear, but these fins are not for me, and I cannot see any experienced diver
using them.

At that point I decided, my feet will never be in Volo fins again, just like
my ass will never be in a Southwest Airlines seat again.

Davy,
Atomic splits with the shoes are used with excellent success by
underwater rugby players . They seem more than able to replace the out
of production Mares Plana Plus. While this may seem a big
recommendation, its appliance to technical diving may just be a typical
case of violation of model theory. Latter predicts certain thoughts
before doing a comparison. In this case these thoughts center around
scaling, streamlining, mass inertia, front area, vortices etc.
Plainly, what's good for the goose, must not be good for the gander.
In other words, a speedboat has a different propeller than an
icebreaker, a mackerel (fast moving fish)other fins than a sunfish(
slow). Tec-Divers are slow moving fish.

And, other than for propulsion only, you need the fin for stabilizing,
so you want a good strong blade with a well defined surface area.
