Steve, our stuff is done by Navy and others, but there is no input on
treatment. We did have a guy who needed repair, and what he did is the usual
: repeated oxygen rides. Personally, if it were me, I'd be at Ocean
Hyperbaric getting them to run me as deep as they could on oxygen with a
motorcycle helmet on . They let me do 4.0 in there for an hour one time to
see if I would tox, and they know the value of hyperbaric oxygen when all
else fails.

The only treatment I have ever heard of for this degree of damage is the
severe oxygen trips repeatedly and drugs that stop the brain and spine from
swelling, used in normal paralysis cases. The problem is , you need non
idiots at the helm when you have to deal with this kind of thing, not some
chamber bozo or non-diving doc. Usually, you need to do this immediately,
not after the fact. This poor kid obviously had a gaping ASD or PFO, and
took the worst kind of hit. This is the kind of thing that the scumbags at
the training agencies don't seem to want to warn people about.

Otherwise, there is one other trick we used, but that was a guess on my
part and I doubt anyone will back that one up, and I am am not sure that
even was what worked in the end, but I will tell you privately what is was
that we tried. I don't want the howling assholes all over me for that one
( a Bill Mee special , but he is a biomedical engineer ).

If you really want the best advice on the planet with regard to this kind
of thing, contact the University of Zurich. They have seen it all and have
tried it all , and may be able to advise your doc on what course of action
to take. Try that and keep them running him on oxygen as deep as he can
stand it.

I'd appreciate it if anyone can forward to me info regarding DCS treatment
in the Michigan area - had a friend's nephew (16 years old, fairly
experienced) get hit while on a 90 ft./:20 dive in Lake Michigan. Can't
walk/urinate after two chamber rides. Who are the experts in that area, or
who else (anywhere) should they consult. Trey, if you see this, whose the
doc. who did the doppler studies on the WKPP guys (U. of MIami?) - the
friend of mine lives down there, she could get info from him? Any help is
appreciated.

  Thanks,

  Steve Straatsma
